Caught in a Collision?

Caught in a collision? Here's what you need to know.

Accidents, unfortunately, sometimes can't be avoided. Many factors are often involved including weather, traffic and road conditions. While accidents can be both frightening and disorienting, it's best to stay calm and to keep a few important things in mind to keep yourself stress-free after the collision.

At Erin Mills Acura, we have an on-site, state-of-the-art Collision Centre at our dealership. Let the friendly and knowledgeable Erin Mills Acura staff assist you in all aspects of your vehicle repair from contacting your insurance company to the final inspection of your vehicle after repairs.

SAFETY FIRST

The safety of you and your passengers should be your primary concern. If it's safe to do so and you are able to do so, more your car away from the flow of the traffic to prevent further collisions. Leave your hazard lights on and exit the vehicle once it's safe to do so.

If you suspect that you or a passenger is seriously injured call an ambulance and the police right away. Be prepared to give an accurate description of the crash location, number of injured passengers and severity of the injuries. Stay on the phone long enough to make sure that all the information has been recorded.

NEVER under any circumstances move anyone injured in the accident as you may aggravate their injuries. Injured persons should only be removed if they are in danger of drowning, suffocating, burning or being electrocuted.

CONTACT YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY

Report your accident to your insurance company as soon as possible after the accident. By notifying your insurance company, you are getting the best possible advice for you and your vehicle.

DOCUMENT THE ACCIDENT

Obtain the necessary information with each driver involved and take pictures of the cars involved in the accident.

If there are eyewitnesses that saw the collision take place, make sure you have their contact information on hand as well. Upon police arrival, make sure that they have the right information for their report.

Below you'll find a form that you can print out and keep with you in your glove box in the event of a collision:

NEVER...

  • Leave the scene of the accident. You could be subject to a criminal prosecution.
  • Sign any unauthorized documents. Unless it's a documented police report, signing a document might have you unknowingly agreeing to something that wasn't disclosed at the time of the incident.
  • Blame or apologize. Being involved in an accident is stressful enough and causing conflict will not make the situation any easier. By apologizing, you are admitting fault which could be used against you if the other driver(s) decides to take legal actions.
  • Accept direct payment. Always go through your insurance company.
