How to Check Your Brake Pads?

How to Check Your Brake Pads?

No matter what vehicle you drive, your brake pads see a lot of action, which is why we stress the importance of regularly checking them for wear and tear. Worn brake pads will directly tarnish your stopping power, fuel efficiency, and car safety, but luckily, Erin Mills Acura is here to fill you in how to keep tabs on them and spare yourself any potential hassles. Find out what to look for in your brake pads before scheduling your next service appointment with us in Mississauga, Ontario.

A Simple Guide to Brake Inspection

Firstly, you’ll want to give your brakes about an hour to cool down before you inspect and handle them, as even short trips can make them extremely hot. We then recommend checking your brake fluid and replacing it if it’s turned very dark. Once you’ve looked at your fluid levels, you’ll need to check your wheels, as worn brake pads leave less brake dust on them. If it’s been a while since your last braking service and your wheels are looking cleaner than usual, it may be time to bring your vehicle to our Service Centre for a proper diagnosis.

As for the pads themselves, you should be able to see them through your wheels, and remember to keep a flashlight handy to get a proper look at their thickness. If your pads are at a quarter-inch thick or less, it’s likely time to get them replaced. Another way of gauging brake pad wear is by looking for a wear indicator slot that comes with some pads. If the slot is just barely visible or gone entirely, your pads likely need replacing. Some vehicles may also alert you to worn brake pads by flashing a warning light on your dashboard. Other common signs your vehicle needs new pads are a loud squealing noise while braking and a vibrating brake pedal or steering wheel. Rest assured, our Parts Department will supply the components you’ll need, and our certified technicians will gladly provide a proper brake inspection and diagnosis and get your braking system back into top shape.
